Washington and Lee University Class of 2022 - Engineering Major
I grew up on our family farm in Natural Bridge, Virginia where I gained a great appreciation for being outside and taking full advantage of everything nature had to offer. I always enjoyed taking things apart to learn how they worked and building them back into something different but better. I started first with remote controlled toys and robotics kits and eventually graduated into building and reworking boat engines, car motors, hovercrafts and whatever I could create with what I had. This led to a natural interest in engineering, which I pursued through highschool and continue pursuing now at Washington and Lee University. I have grown my interest in the mechanical and electrical side of engineering but recently have developed an interest in environmental engineering.
In the summer of 2019, I worked for Austin Electrical Construction in Buchanan, Virginia on several projects at airports in the southern Virginia area. These projects included runway and taxiway light replacements at Blue Ridge Airport and security tower installations at Roanoke Regional Airport. Other work experience includes renovation work on an 1800s era tavern, The Inn at Forest Oaks, to help restore it into the bed and breakfast it is today. For the past several summers, along with a friend from high school, I have owned and operated an ice cream boat on Smith Mountain Lake as a means of making money for college expenses as well as pursuing the business idea we had as children.
I am currently in the early stages of my capstone project here at Washington and Lee where I will be researching the currently available techniques for determining pipeline health and condition and ultimately proposing a new technique that could allow for less expensive testing and evaluation. The current methods for determining the health of a pipeline, especially those that are buried or not easily accessible, are very expensive and require highly trained workers to conduct them. The goal is to propose a more universally available option for this very important test.
I am looking for an opportunity to work where creativity is appreciated and I will be given the chance to put my skills and passions to good use.
